It is very easy to make your own DIY insect repellent with natural ingredients! There are a lot of products available in the market. However, most of them contain chemical ingredients. The homemade insect repellent that we suggest is based on the bug repellent properties of some essential oils.
The ingredient that you will need for your DIY insect repellent are:
- 40 ml water (preferably distilled)
- 10 ml pure alcohol
- 1 table spoon Jojoba oil
- 10 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops Lavender essential oil
- 5 drops Lemongrass essential oil
- 1 empty bottle with spray
- 1 mixing bowl
Pour the alcohol in a bowl and dilute the essential oils into it. Add the Jojoba oil and stir. Transfer the mixture to a spray bottle and add water. Close the bottle and shake. That was it! Your DIY insect repellent is ready! Not only it keeps mosquitoes away from you but it is also very refreshing and has a beautiful smell. Spray on the exposed parts of your body and enjoy bite free nights and its lovely scent. CAUTION: do not spray in your face! You need to shake it before use.
If you do not have white spirit you can use pure vodka(!). Also, instead of Jojoba Oil you can use another plant oil like almond oil or coconut oil. Apart from the above essential oils, there are many more essential oils that have insect repellent properties like peppermint, lemon, rosemary etc. You can experiment with essential oils that you have at home and create your own unique homemade repellent with the scent that you prefer. However, do not increase the quantity of essential oils in the mixture. If you add drops from an additional essential oil you will need to decrease the same number of drops from another one or increase the other ingredients (water, alcohol, oil) accordingly.
Finally, we would like to remind you that the use of essential oils is not indicated for children under three years of age and pregnant women.
