The search for the best organic cosmetics is everyone’s concern. The storm of “organic” products is constant in all media. This is why it is difficult to distinguish what is really natural and organic. However, we must remember that what we put on our skin is as important as what we eat.
What does organic product mean?
Organic farming is a way of production and processing that guarantees both the quality and the origin of a product. At the same time it respects the environment, biodiversity and animal welfare. Organic production goes hand in hand with sustainable development while at the same time contributing to economic, social and environmental prosperity. An organic product may not contain ingredients that are considered toxic, infectious or irritating to the body.
Three criteria to choose the best organic cosmetics
1. Seek certification. Claims that the product is organic are not enough. It must be certified by a recognized organization. In order to be organic, a product must contain biological ingredients exceeding a defined percentage. Often manufacturers promote products as “organic” just because they contain one or more herbal ingredients without the necessary certification. Do not rely on advertising graphics such as leaflets or trees that refer to organic crops. Investigate to see if the certification mark belongs to a reputable organization.
2. Read the ingredients. The indication of the ingredients is mandatory and must be included in the package. Ingredients are listed in descending order of content. On top of the list is the one that is used most in the product. You will often find that many “natural” cosmetics contain only some natural ingredients and especially at the bottom of the list.
3. Research the point of sale. Lately more and more new “organic cosmetics” e-shops appear on the internet and especially on social media. Do a little research before ordering: How long does it operate? Does it have a physical store or at least an office where you can see the products? Which cosmetics companies does it work with? Does it list the ingredients on the product pages?
Are organic products cruelty free?
A very common misconception about organic products is that they are cruelty free by definition. A lot of of consumers believe that, as long as their ingredients are organic, the products have not been tested on animals.
Unfortunately this is not the case. Organic ingredients are tested for safety and efficacy as are chemicals, and these tests may involve animal experiments. This also applies to cosmetics produced or sold in the European Union. Even the best organic cosmetics can be tested on animals and at the same time have organic product certification. To be sure that the cosmetics we choose are cruelty free, they must also have Leaping Bunny certification.
