There is a lot of debate lately regarding the use of Cannabis for medical purposes. Apart from health, ongoing research shows that hemp oil has a lot of beneficial properties for our beauty.
Hemp oil in beauty
The popularity of hemp oil for beauty purposes is increasing. Hemp Seed Oil has high levels of Omega 3 and 6 Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). Hemp Seed Oil contains the highest level of EFAs of all natural oils. The main substance of hemp oil is CBD (Cannabidiol). CBD does not have any drug properties but has significant medical benefits as it may be useful in reducing pain and inflammation, controlling epileptic seizures etc. Cannabis plant contains also THC(Tetrahydrocannabidiol) that provides the psychoactive effects of marijuana, affecting the brain more than the body. However, it is not contained in hemp oil used for beauty purposes.
Hemp oil provides nourishing protection to the skin, while the high moisture content helps to repair and soften damaged skin cells. There is clinical research that cannabinoids have anti-aging — antioxidant – properties. Hemp is particularly ubiquitous in shampoos and conditioners as it is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and as such a great emollient for hair. The research is ongoing as there are indications cannabidiol has the potential for helping more skin diseases.
The plant
Regarding the plant from which these substances are derived, here are two main Cannabis species: Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indiga. In general, the Cannabis Sativa is considered to be the most commonly grown of the marijuana strains. The production of hemp oil comes mainly from Cannabis Sativa crops. Hemp is also a sustainable wonder crop. It can grow in a variety of climates and soil types. The crops grow close to one another so they take up less space and the hemp plant grows without the use of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and thrives on less water than most crops. This makes it the environments best friend and a natural way to clean up soil pollution.
The use of cannabis for medicinal purposes is not something new. In some U.S. states the growing of medical cannabis is already legalized. There are at least two FDA-approved medications that contain cannabinoid chemicals in pill form. Continued research may lead to more medications and more patients can benefit from its use.
