More and more designers turn their back on fur as public awareness about the cruelty involved in the fur industry is growing. Famous brands like Stella McCartney, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and lately Armani have permanently excluded fur from their collections.
Whether it came from an animal on a fur farm or one who was trapped in the wild, every fur product caused an animal tremendous suffering—and took away a life. The pressure from certain celebrities and animal activists has had an impact on the fur industry but unfortunately fur is still considered as a statement and luxurious material for fashion. However, there are some famous haute couture brands that have permanently banned fur from their collections.
Stella McCartney
As a vegetarian brand Stella McCartney does not use leather, skins, fur or feathers in any of their products. McCartney said: “I’ve been speaking to younger women about it recently and they don’t even want real fur. So I feel like maybe things have moved on …”
Tommy Hilfiger In 2007, Tommy Hilfiger announced that they were permanently dropping fur from its collections. “Starting immediately the company will cease development of any product containing fur and any fur garment already in production will be phased out of sales channels by the delivery of the spring 2008,” Hilfiger said in a statement.
Polo Ralph Lauren In 2007, fashion house Polo Ralph Lauren made the decision to drop all fur from its clothing line collections after meeting with PETA.According to the company’s news release, “[W]e feel that the time is right to take this action.” |

Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood has been added to the growing list of designers going fur-free since 2007. The renowned British designer came to her compassionate decision after meeting with members of PETA Europe and learning about the suffering of animals raised and trapped for fur.
Hugo Boss In 2015, Hugo Boss agreed to stop using fur as of fall 2016. The announcement came after a year of negotiations with The Humane Society of the United States and The Fur Free Alliance. A Hugo Boss spokesman said,”For many years Hugo Boss has continuously decreased the use of fur and subsequently, only a very small share was left in the last collections. The last rabbit fur used was for select pieces only (trims on hoods and on sleeves for example), which we have now completely dropped.”
Armani The latest good news come from Armani. In March 2016 the famed designer announced he will remove all fur from his lines beginning with the Autumn/Winter 2016 collection. “I am pleased to announce that the Armani Group has made a firm commitment to abolish the use of animal fur in its collections,” Giorgio Armani said in a statement. “Technological progress made over the years allows us to have valid alternatives at our disposition that render the use of cruel practices unnecessary as regards animals. Pursuing the positive process undertaken long ago, my company is now taking a major step ahead, reflecting our attention to the critical issues of protecting and caring for the environment and animals.”
